Favorites (1 – food)

Marina asked me for some of my favorites, and so here they are, for your reading pleasure:

Food Favorites:

  • Favorite fast food restaurant?
  • Favorite ice cream flavor?
  • Favorite kind of sushi?
  • Favorite breakfast food?
  • Favorite pizza topping?
  • Favorite dessert?
  • Favorite comfort food?
  • Favorite thing to cook?
  • Favorite snack? (I know you don’t snack, but try!)

Fast food restaurant: I’m really, really not a fast food guy. I can’t remember the last fast food I ate. That said? For years I was a big fan of the primary product of Starbucks – work space. For 5 or 6 years, ending about a year ago, I spent 2-4 hours a day in Starbucks. In that time, I mostly ordered large skim cappuccinos – or, as my father oddly calls them, cappuccini. (I have never spoken the “word” “venti” aloud. And I never will.)

I have a weak spot for McDonald’s cheeseburgers and fries and chocolate shakes. But it’s probably been a year since I had that.

I’m hostile to – or maybe not hostile to, but avoidant of – most fast food restaurants for reasons having to do with antediluvian labor policies, a general (but lightly held) preference to avoid more processed foods, and a somewhat more firmly held anxiety about their contribution to climate change.

Ice cream flavor: There’s only one ice cream flavor worth the calories, in my book: Haagen Dazs chocolate peanut butter.

Sushi: yellowtail

Breakfast food: my regular is yogurt (Fage 0%) with granola. My favorite is bagel with whitefish salad and lox. Though nowadays, “lox” seems to mean simply smoked salmon and not the heavily salted smoked salmon of my youth. Also? I love me an eggamuffin.

Pizza topping: I prefer my pizza plain, with oregano and garlic. But I’ll happily add pepperoni, mushrooms, sauteed onions, peppers, anchovies, or just about anything else short of pineapple, if my companions wish.

Dessert: see above, ice cream. Or, if out, chocolate souffle.

Comfort food: see above, ice cream. Or maybe baked potatoes with grated cheddar.

Favorite thing to cook: soup. I make excellent Dutch brown bean soup. Also pea, lentil, and chicken soups. I also like cooking just about any fish.

Snack: almonds. (And, fwiw, I fucking love snacks. Pretzels. Carrots. Peanuts. Goldfish. Olives. Seaweed. Peanut butter.)
